Last time I posted we discussed hope and its VITAL role when getting an understanding on faith and how it works with hope. Now we will go into more detail in this second part of
"The Believer's Hope."
Now faith is only the substance or tangibility of what we hope for and what we cannot see. Rom. 8:24-25 reads, "For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for? But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it." Now let's look closely at this verse of scripture and you will see that there is no such thing as "visible hope" because "hope that is seen is not hope." Now as you see, faith and hope virtually share the same attributes:(they are both invisible, take action to bring into reality, and must come by hearing so they can be present.) It is important that another aspect hope and faith be explored.
Matthew 17:19-20 gives a very subtle truth and if your not careful you will miss it. It reads, "Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out? And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. " Now this is Jesus after He came down off the mount of transfiguration and found His (70) disciples unable to cast out a demon from a boy and later they ask Jesus why and He tells them "because of your unbelief." He then says to them "If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, YE SHALL SAY..." most people get caught up thinking that Jesus is making reference here to the size of the seed and miss the fact that faith was not compared to the size of the mustard seed but rather it was identified with the nature of the mustard seed. I will explain.....
(Now don't forget our topic "The Believer's Hope.") Romans 12:3 reads, "For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith." God has "dealt to every man the measure of faith" not "A" measure of faith. So faith is not in degrees, levels, or of a particular amount. There is one measure and its already been "dealt to every man." So many have taken Matt.17:20 and said that Jesus was saying that it only takes a little faith to do big things, on the contrary people. Jesus is saying that faith must be treated like a seed. Look at what He says, "If ye have faith AS a grain of mustard seed ye shall say unto this mountain.." Faith is as a grain of mustard seed not "the size" of a grain of mustard seed. Now when you plant a seed into soil it produces after its own kind, Gen.1:11 reads, "And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so." Seed brings forth more of its own kind this is why faith is to be treated the same way and if you have a mustard seed you will water it, right? Well "If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed ye shall say..and nothing shall be impossible unto you."
The mystery of the parable of the seed and sower gives more light to "faith as a grain of mustard seed." The word is seed and faith cometh by the hearing of the Word of God. "The sower soweth the word(Mk.4:14.). So have faith and hope to the end.
